Nursing Side Preferences
It’s not uncommon for babies to prefer to nurse on one side over the other. This can create a stressful situation for both mom and baby. It also can signal an underlying issue for the baby, such as tension in their jaw, neck, and skull. This can make breastfeeding more uncomfortable on one side than the other.
With gentle chiropractic adjustments, we can relieve that tension so your baby is not only comfortable, but happy nursing on both sides.
Chiropractic care for infants also has tons of other benefits, from better sleep to colic relief.
Tongue Ties
A tongue tie is an extra piece of skin that tethers a baby’s tongue and can affect breastfeeding. It can impact a child’s oral facial development, ability to breastfeed, and speech.
-
Common signs of a tongue tie are struggling to properly breastfeed, excessive drooling, poor weight gain, a clicking noise when the baby is sucking, and chewing on the nipple during breastfeeding. But sometimes a baby doesn’t have symptoms at all.
-
Not all tongue ties require surgery or revision. Depending on your baby, often gentle chiropractic care can release the tension and address the underlying root cause.
-
If your baby is getting a frenotomy, or tongue tie surgery, we recommend having your infant come into our Boulder office both before and after the procedure for bodywork. This can help improve the rate of success of the procedure and help your baby recover faster.
We’ll provide gentle chiropractic adjustments to reduce tension and calm and balance your baby’s nervous system.
Tongue tie revisions can shift the musculature in your baby’s mouth, jaw, neck, shoulders, and spine. Chiropractic can balance the alignment and help your baby’s body adapt after a revision.

Ultrasound for Plugged Milk Ducts
Well Spine offers therapeutic ultrasound as a non-invasive medical treatment for clogged milk ducts.
We cannot treat an active infection, but therapeutic ultrasound is gentle and beneficial for those pesky clogs that won’t move or recurrent clogs after mastitis.
-
While breastfeeding, your baby’s latch should create a vacuum effect, which promotes the removal of milk from your breast and allows for further milk production. When milk is not effectively removed, a block or clog can form in the duct.
-
It is non-invasive and painless. It can even reduce pain and make breastfeeding more comfortable.
-
Therapeutic ultrasound is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses sound waves to produce deep heating in tissues.
Ultrasound is a treatment that has been shown to dilate the ducts, break the clog up into smaller pieces, and allow it to move toward the nipple for proper removal by breastfeeding or pumping.
How It Works:
Sound wave penetration: During the procedure, a handheld ultrasound is applied to the affected breast. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves that penetrate the tissues without causing any damage. The sound waves can reach the deep layers of the breast tissue, where the clogged ducts are located.
Increased circulation: The ultrasound waves cause microscopic vibrations in the tissues, which leads to an increase in blood flow to the affected area. This increased circulation helps in reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing.
Heat generation: One of the main benefits of therapeutic ultrasound is the deep heating effect it produces in the tissues. This heating can help soften and break down the clog within the milk ducts and dilate the ducts, making it easier for the milk to flow and relieving the obstruction.
Improved drainage: The combination of increased blood flow and heat can also help improve lymphatic drainage, which aids in the removal of waste products and toxins from the affected area.
Pain relief: The heat generated by therapeutic ultrasound can help relax muscles and reduce pain, making it more comfortable during breastfeeding and pumping.
